Anyways here's one of the barns that was repainted and turned mexican. They all ended up that way; turned Mexican (because of Obama). The one I mentioned that got torn down on the west side of Escondido was one of the best though (Mexican). For one, it was open 24hrs back before anything else was and that was really helpful during my juvenile delinquent days. And later on, when I like worked and stuff, it was also nice to have some fast food available late at night/early morning since I tended to work odd hours for a lot of years. And it was good (still is - it's across the street now) and it was cheap. But yeah, I think they all went Mexican right after Picnic shut down. The buildings are pretty iconic.

The Picnic N Chicken I thought I remembered in PB wasn't in a barn, so my memory may be failing me. I just remember it on Cass St around Loring. This convo does answer my question about what was originally in the barn-like building on Poway Rd that now houses a taco shop, which I believe is called Armando's.

Another place I loved as a kid that's now absent from San Diego, is H. Salt fish n chips. My grandparents loved that place. Are you accusing me of liking old people food? hMmmm? ?

When I was a little bit younger (in my late teens and 20s) we used to live near Convoy St. where there was a Taco Bell, a Jack's, and a Der Weinerschnitzel (sp) (also a McDonald's but I've never been much of a fan of theirs except for the fish sandwich), and since we all had different tastes and needs at the time, we would hit up all those places to order our food for a meal. Chili dogs from Der, tacos or cheesburger from Jack, burritos etc. from Taco Bell. I also remember an H. Salt Fish & Chips there for a time. Now there's an entire slew of stuff on that strip.... Majorly busy. Yep. Lot's of pr0n and stipper joints to go along with those fast food choices. Pretty much one-stop-shopping for young single guys.

Maybe some zoning law kept them from building one there. The barns are unmistakable though. There was only one layout (other than the anomaly in PB you mention) for the restaurant. The internets says it was a KFC guy who founded the chain. Aaaaah memories....

I'd love to hit up an H. Salt Fish & Chips place, just to see if it's as good as I remember it. They all seem to be up in the LA area. I've been searching around for worthy fish and chips places the last few years and found some good places, but nothing that thrilled me.

There's a chain of vegan places around called Native Foods. They have some pretty tasty stuff, but the one thing you won't see on their menu or their web site is the calorie counts for their items. They don't advertise it's lo-cal and really, people should know better than to assume that vegan = low calorie. Even so, ya know there are lots of people eating their version of a bacon cheeseburger thinking it's going to help them fit into those jeans they've been hanging onto since 40 lbs ago.
Still, even though that "bacon cheeseburger" bears no resemblance to a true bacon cheeseburger, it tastes good. For 600+ calories, it better.

For those who crave food from the fair and are pissed your arteries are working way too well, Chicken Charlies just opened up a brick and mortar shop in Clairemont in one of the shopping centers at Balboa and Genesee. I never ate any of it at the fair, but I hear it's one of the more popular joints there.
Finally, a place where after you eat your fried chicken, you get follow it up with fried Kool-aid, a fried Twinkie or Fried cookie dough.
ETA: I don't see a web site for them, but on yelp there are pictures of their menu. One item is a grilled Milky Way and cheese sandwich. Really?

People are all excited about this. I dunno...
The Koolaid sounds disgusting enough, let alone chocolate on a cheese-wich. But that disgust piqued my curiosity so I had to go look to see what exactly fried Koolaid was all about. So it's basically dough balls with the powder worked into the mix. Sounds vaguely like those Jello cookies that were popular back in the day except deep fried to kick up the heart healthiness of it.
Koolaid powder reminds me too much of a backpacking trip I went on where I used a little bit of it in water to help force myself to hydrate (which can be a challenge above the treeline). I also got a bit of altitude sickness on that jaunt and threw up a nice purple mess from it, thus ending my fondness for anything related. I guess I'm just jaded.

I'm guessing it's something that they'll be excited about for a bit, but the novelty will wear off before long. That may have been something I'd track down when I was in my 20's, but no more.
On a completely different note, I just returned from the store and picked up the Halloween candy. Since I care about the treat or treaters, I'm doing an exhaustive QA/freshness test on the goods. So far so good, but more testing will be needed.

News to me: They (whoever?) make a boxed mix of those Red Lobster cheese biscuit things. Generally I avoid stuff like that because (a) it never matches the actual product, and less so (b) because I try to steer clear of super processed foods. But I felt daring so I picked one up to try out. These things were pretty gosh-darned good and authentic (if you like the real ones at Red Lobster). In fact, I'd go so far to say that they were slightly better with the bonus being you don't have to sit on a chair that feels permanently slicked down in butter.

Apparently there's this stuff at Trader Joe's called Cookie Butter. I've been hearing various people talk about the stuff like it's a legal version of crack. It's weird shit - it's buttery, but its made from some type of pulverized cookie, a shitload of sugar and oil, and has a slight gingerbread taste. I finally bought a jar to give it a shot, and...eh. It's cloyingly sweet, though not too bad with pretzels. Still, considering its pretty much a heart attack in a jar, I won't be buying it again.
I thought it may be something like Nothing Bundt Cakes which are good, but women go freaking nuts for, so I offered some up to my betrothed, and she liked it less than I did. I hope it has a long shelf life.
