Popeye's are rare enough around here that I've only indulged their goodies a few times that I can recall. The only thing that stands out is/was their reluctance to give me a decent supply of sauces. And they had gravy on the menu, but they wouldn't sell it separately or something? I just remember being baffled by this behavior last time I was there, and it was all so matter-of-fact; "Sorry, the gravy only comes with _____", as if for the protection of the public. Ummmm, ok. So like if I try to dunk a chicken strip into the gravy, there's a chance I'll create dark matter and wipe out the universe? I have never tried Popeye's chicken, how does it compare to KC? Only had it once because I wasn't aware it Louisiana Cajun (?) style and while we ate it I've not gone back. So I'd have to put it at Cajun KFC. Church's is still around in various places I think, and I'd put them price/food the closest. I still miss Pic n Kin Chicken. And to stay on topic the sides of KFC just can't be found elsewhere. Especially the coleslaw!

Picnic N Chicken? Yeah. That place ruled. Those little orange candy slices that came with everything for no apparent reason. The city of Escondido nuked the building on the west end of town not too many years ago, but the one near the old section is still there.

YES I have no idea how I got Pic n Kin other than late evening beverages.

Picnic N Chicken was the place in the barn buildings. They were all over. They bit the dust in the late 70s, I think. The breading on the chicken was outstanding. It was the Colonel's extra crispy before the Colonel did extra crispy, and better. They had the little cornfed looking farmer guy as their icon. You don't remember that?

I remember the Picnic N Chicken - there was one in PB when I was a wee lad.
I never had the issues you had with Popeye's - I usually get more stuff than I need in my bag. Then again, I'm pretty fucking adorable. Either way, I still am a sucker for their spicy chicken. I've been meaning to try Crispy Fried Chicken in City Heights for a while, but I'm not usually in that area and fried chicken isn't a destination meal for me. One day.

I remember going to some type of barn place (drive-in) that was in Pt. Loma, WAY WAY back in time. Maybe that was it. Don't remember anything about it.

A fried chicken doughnut sandwich? Really, how many bong hits do you have to do before that becomes appetizing?

And the donut is glazed, so it's sweet? +fried chicken... which isn't. Ugh. It's like that Simpsons joke about nuts and chewing gum. eta: (thank you, internets)

I have never heard of Picnic N Chicken, or Pic n Kin Chicken. I've lived in San Diego from 1956 on.... Where was this chicken place? Seriously? The one I remember best was on El Cajon Blvd down towards 30th street. Looks like they finally torn down the barn or remodeled it. Anyways here's one of the barns that was repainted and turned mexican. I think they were all white with blue roofs before.

Loma but I only remember going once, and I don't remember the food. If I ever wanted chicken I went to then named Kentucky Fried Chicken where they always had good deals on their meals. NOT like now where it costs an arm and a leg to buy something there.

When I was a little bit younger (in my late teens and 20s) we used to live near Convoy St. where there was a Taco Bell, a Jack's, and a Der Weinerschnitzel (sp) (also a McDonald's but I've never been much of a fan of theirs except for the fish sandwich), and since we all had different tastes and needs at the time, we would hit up all those places to order our food for a meal. Chili dogs from Der, tacos or cheesburger from Jack, burritos etc. from Taco Bell. I also remember an H. Salt Fish & Chips there for a time. Now there's an entire slew of stuff on that strip.... Majorly busy.
