These Ginger Chew candies from Trader Joe's may be my favorite store-bought candy, and this is coming from a serious chocolate fiend. I bought two bags of them on Wed and they're already gone. Though, it's not something to chow on if you have iffy fillings. Aw, screw it - eat em anyways. They're worth it.

Yeah, I'll pass on those flavors, though the one time I was at a Salt & Straw, it was pretty damn good ice cream. There's a gourmet chocolate place in South Park, Eclipse Chocolate, which turns out some really good stuff. Expensive, but worth it. One of my favorites is a chocolate truffle with a filling made from goat cheese. Sounds gross, but it really works well. They also make a great hot chocolate, which is one more reason I like the colder weather - along with winter beers, it's also time for hot chocolate.

Unsurprisingly, I'm not a fan of fusion chocolate but my wife loves EC. However she hates goat cheese, so perhaps I'll buy her some of those truffles and watch the dilemma unfold in front of me.
Hot chocolate is a different story though. I'm a big fan of Mexican style and sadly (oddly?) nobody really does it right around here. The best one I ever had was at this place we just happened across in Berkeley on a mini-trip to a friend's wedding. They did it up good even though there wasn't a Mexican in sight in that place.

Potato cheese soup and a bottle of $3.99 faux champagne for New Year's eve-fest. It's going to be a wild one around here.

^ Looks good, though I'm not a fan of scallions. Easy enough to scoop off if you wanna send me a bowl. I've been soupless so far this winter - I'll have to either drop some hints to the woman of the house since that's more in her culinary wheelhouse than mine, or hit up some establishment.

The green parts are just a byproduct, definitely not critical- definitely can be scooped off. However the white part of those onions are make or break since they get carmelized alongside the sausage and eventually dissolve completely into the beer (this batch, Karl Strauss imp. stout) which is the basis of the smokiness.
I'm not a recipe kind of guy, but I will say the whole thing starts off with a couple tablespoons of bacon fat and half a stick of butter. Not exactly heart healthy, but the perfect amount of decadence for our brief winter spell.

Soda + cake mix = cakes. Since I'm a dude and figured cake just magically came from old lady's ovens, I never knew about this. But apparently it works and the combinations are limitless.

Interesting. I doubt I'll ever try it since I've bothered to make maybe five cakes in my life and Costco turns out good ones for a nice price for those occasions the better half doesn't feel like being in the kitchen.
That said, it does make me curious enough to think about it. With my lack of baking talent, though, I'd be more likely to do something to ruin her cake pans than create anything fit for human consumption.
