Daaaaaaaaamnnnnnn. That looks good. Today is opening of dove season, not hunting today, having a hard time with that. We always wrap our dove breasts with bacon and cook them on the grill. As I have gotten older and when I do them on my own I have also added different chiles as well. But man this picture brought me back. Dove breast, bacon and a chile pepper all tied together with a toothpick.

This probably isn't the right place for this, however, if you hadn't noticed, I have a hard time following the rules. As a back story to my post above, wrote this the other day.
I feel like a crack addict about now.
Sept 1 has pretty much been a family Holliday since I was young. Yes, I know it is a real holliday. But, to a lot of folks, Sept. 1st is the opening of the hunting (dove) season. I have always been extremely lucky about where I have been able to go for opening of dove season.
I'm 37, and I have not been out in a field at 5:30 AM one time in the last 29 years. And every year I went out it really wasn't ever in doubt we would limit, most years we limited within an hour.
First, it was a family friend, our dentist. His parents had a ranch out in Patterson. Great open field next to the San Joaquin River.
After that it was a ranch outside of Livingston, the ranch Pete Vella managed. If you were within 100 yards of Sal's tree (a huge old oak) you were guaranteed to limit within about 15 minutes.
And finally for about the last 15 years at the Faith Ranch on the 132, east of Modesto/west of the 5. Well, I wouldn't even call that hunting. It was just shooting. I mean we would let plenty birds pass by without shooting and wait for the perfect shot, or the plumpest birds.
And if a guaranteed limit wasn't good enough, at Livingston and Faith Ranch, the kicker was that we were hunting with the Gallo family. So, after the brief *hunt*, we would clean our birds and then retire to another local (the river cottage, etc.) where we would have lunch. Lunch was always an open fire where we would grill game that everyone brought (duck, geese, dove, quail, boar, venison) and there were cases of the finest single vineyard wines Gallo produced, most of which were so limited they never made it to market.
Now, my father, my in, is vacationing in Italy and Spain and will not be back for opening of dove season.
And like the swallows returning to Capistrano, I see doves everywhere I look as September 1st beckons. I find myself nervous and anxious. Everything I have grown up with is telling me, get ready. There is a smell in the air in late August when the doves are a flitter. I watch them, track their movement, my wife gives me looks as if to say wtf are you doing. I can't help it.
So, as Sept. 1st slowly draws nearer, I will notice the ever increasing dove population a flight in the sky and recall how incredibly lucky I have been to be able to participate in the opening day festivities that were provided me.
Thanks pops.
Now hurry home and let's work on a spot for opening of quail season.

It's nice to have traditions like that even if it means blasting some poor dove out of the sky. An old co-worker used to regularly invite me to go with him opening day but I never got around to it. The hassle of the hunting license and safety course was deterrent enough, but that was mostly laziness, I admit. Plus, he didn't have an awesome "in" like you do (which honestly sounds pretty goddamned awesome) so it was like some field in El Centro instead. And I don't know... El Centro + September = teh suck. Plus I like birds (although it's sorta love/hate) so I don't know if I could pull the trigger on one even if I did intend to eat it. Dove, like all game bird is weird meat and an acquired taste. I like it better than quail because you're not picking around at the thing as much, but it's still not chicken. I like chicken. Chicken rules.

Doves: The house I'm in now had this gazebo thing when we bought it that was infested with termites. One of my first projects was to tear it down, but then I realized it was home to a dove couple with a nest. And even though I'm a total dick, I didn't have the heart to just rip down the avian loveshack while the eggs were in the nest. So I waited. And got sidetracked, and the next season rolled around and there they were again. And again and again. This cycle continued for about ten years until the termites had made the thing so unstable I had to destroy it. Anyway, it was always fun to see the things in there and then see the little fledglings poke their heads out of the nest and eventually make short hops to the roof, and finally fly away. "Don't shoot us, bro!"

I remember trying to trim a tree here years ago and didn't realize until I had 3/4 clipped through the branch there was a nest. It started to tilt and I tried to casually put the nest with eggs on another supportive area. Didn't work but I got to deal with the STARES as the parents came back to and say NO WAY!

Damn, GG, I hope for your sake that you didn't have to park on the street at the time. You'd be spending a fortune on car washes.

The in-laws always host Thanksgiving. Normally this is ok, but they want to do a curry theme meal this year. Today was the first I heard this. Fucking curry... for Thanksgiving. Might as well burn the bible and a few flags to go along with it.

In San Diego for the forum party and my family gathering. My family is cooking lobster, mussels and clam cakes today, with rice and salad. Never had the sea food but I'm being adventurous and am game to try it. Sounds healthy at least.

Turns out they were just messing with me. Although they did do a potluck style T-giving once where curry was the main course. Sucked. They know how much I hated that so their little joke now. I'm still on for bringing a potato dish to real Thanksgiving.
(can't believe you've never had lobs or crab cakes)

"It's easy to make" he says. What he eats is hot and spicy. But no substitute for turkey, dressing and gravy, with mashed potatoes. The lobster was just so so to me, not a fan. Don't ever need to eat lobster again. But I liked all the other stuff.
